This policy applies to all employees.

The Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy can be found through the ERNIE site in the Administrative Policies and Procedures Manual under Section 8 – Human Resources; 8.6.2. Employees or groups of employees may be required to undergo drug testing on a random or chance basis. During a 9-panel urinalysis screen, fresh urine is collected in a clear container. During the collection, it is maintained in a controlled environment to reduce tampering with the urine specimen and false results. The following substances may be tested for: Marijuana (THC); Cocaine; Amphetamines; Phencyclidine (PCP); Opiates; Barbiturates; Benzodiazepines; Methadone; Oxycodone.

Actions to be taken for refusal to be tested, failure to comply with testing procedures, and positive test results:

  • When testing is required, the employee will comply with all directives of the University concerning the place of testing, the manner in which the person is to arrive at the place of testing, and any other related matters. Failure to comply will result in the employee being subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
  • Employees who are directed to undergo testing in accordance with the policies contained herein, and refuse, shall be terminated.
  • Negative-dilute test results may be grounds for dismissal. At the discretion of the University, employees who present with negative-dilute test results may request that an independent laboratory test the specimen, at the employee’s cost, and may be suspended with or without pay pending retest results.
  • Positive test results and/or consecutive negative-dilute test results may be grounds for immediate termination or other disciplinary action at the discretion of the University.

To preserve the confidentiality ERAU strives to maintain, the employee will be notified if the test result is confirmed positive, and what the next step is. An employee, on request, has right to obtain the written test results, as well as right to provide explanation for a positive test result.
